Yard Veteran is committed to honoring and serving vets in our hometown. This month, we showed our gratitude to Paul by removing four trees from his backyard and planting a new tree for him that will eventually provide a beautiful area for Paul to be nearest his favorite spot in the yard.

Here’s what Paul wrote:

My name is Paul. I’m an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan as a radio repair technician both in and out of a combat zone. Since my honorable discharge from service, I returned to the northeast section of Philadelphia, PA, where I was raised and purchased my home. At about that time, I suffered an onset of debilitating PTSD coupled with severe depression. Many hospitalizations and treatments later at the VAMC in Philadelphia, loss of a limb and a medical condition affecting my right dominant hand, I finally settled into my home. With the support and love of family, friends and two mostly well-behaved rescue dogs, Boomer and Mister, I at last began to reorganize my life and refocus my objectives. I think and pray that I’m finally back on track.

With the help of a motorized wheelchair, I am able to take the dogs for walks or simply get out of the house for a quick trip to a small nearby shopping mall. Perhaps this was where Leo had known of me through his aunt who lives around the corner. One day he knocked on my door and generously offered his professional services and help to remove very overgrown and dying trees in my backyard. I offered to pay for his services, however he declined, insisting that it would be his proud honor to help a fellow veteran and neighbor. Needless to say, I became overwhelmed through his outreach of caring consideration and kindness. He completed all that he proposed and promised in a deliberate, detailed, professional manner. Believe me when I say it was a labored effort.

I am extremely grateful for his thoughtfulness and investment into my welfare. I’m not sure how or if I can ever repay this service except to reach out to other veterans, as Leo has done, by saying YOU are not alone, not ever. Never consider yourself a burden, because by letting others help you, you have blessed them with the opportunity to give back, serve someone and return a love. May God bless and keep you always, Leo.

With warm regards and heartfelt thanks,

Paul
